Sunset in West Rutland

Welcome to West Rutland

After you cyber-visit, we hope you will come visit us in person. Like most small towns in Vermont, we have a lot to offer and are truly a special place.

West Rutland's origins revolve around the marble industry. This has created a rich cultural heritage, stemming from a time when the streets and quarries were filled with exotic voices of the immigrant laborers.

Public Library

Our landscape, has changed since the marble heyday era. The commercial quarries are closed, but the uniqueness and visual reminders of that marble heyday era have not faded. Where else will you find a school that teaches how to sculpt marble and visit small private galleries of the local artists? This things amongst others creates a rich and colorful striving community.

We are tucked away in between the Taconic Mountain Range and the main range of the Green Mountains. The photo above depicts Hanley Mountain and the West Rutland Marsh, two of West Rutland's geographic landmarks.

The Marsh

Some of West Rutland's best kept secrets are the 800 acre marsh, the Carving Studio, a hang gliding mountain and our community spirit. The Marsh has been officially recognized by the National Audubon society as an Important Bird Area. There are both rare and common species of birds and other various types of wildlife in abundance. West Rutland is actively purchasing and conserving land in the Marsh. The Carving Studio is a unique establishment that offers various artistic educational programs with an emphasis on marble sculpting. There are accredited programs from one week to two months long taught by twenty regular and several guest instructors. Hanley Mountain creates one of the best hang gliding launching areas on the east coast. West Rutland's community spirit is unsurpassed by none. Our annual tasting supper, held each October, which brings out the community and its cultural diversity is one fine example of our community spirit.

During the past decade, we have concentrated on modernizing our infrastructure to make our physical attributes match the strong community spirit. The advancements continue and today we have an Industrial Park, Recreation Area, new streets, new sidewalks, major school improvements and a marsh conservation project.
