Welcome to the West Rutland Marsh, where nearly 800 acres of contiguous wetlands await your discovery. This is an important wetland complex due to its association with Upper Castleton River watershed. Many different natural communities are represented in the marsh: red or silver maple-green ash swamp, northern white cedar swamp, hemlock swamp, shallow emergent marsh, sedge meadow, cattail marsh, alluvial shrub swamp and alder swamp. Because of its vast diversity in available habitat, the West Rutland marsh is a wildlife oasis. The marsh, which is located between Whipple Hollow Road and Marble Street Extension, has many vantage points due to the surrounding roads. Also, the West Rutland Marsh Boardwalk located along Marble Street Extension, will give visitors access to a wetland where they can learn about the functions and values they serve. This boardwalk, which will be handicapped accessible, will also, allow for enhanced wildlife viewing opportunities, especially for the many birders who come to this marsh for bird watching. Regardless of the season, or whether you are an experience birder, a student, or someone just looking for a place to "get away from it all", the West Rutland marsh will surely leave you with an experience to remember. Although the Town of West Rutland owns approximately 140 acres of the marsh, much of it is privately owned. Please be respectful so that we can all enjoy the marsh for years to come. |
